Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Davidson, NC
If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic stress, or an eating disorder, you have likely spent a massive amount of energy trying to answer one question: "How do I get rid of this feeling?"
You may have tried to "think positive," ignore the negative thoughts, or avoid situations that trigger your discomfort. You may have convinced yourself that you can only start truly living your life once your anxiety is gone, once your body shame disappears, or once you finally feel "motivated" enough.
The tragedy of this approach is that the harder we fight against our internal experiences, the bigger and louder they tend to become. It is like being caught in quicksand—the more you struggle to get out, the deeper you sink. While you are busy fighting a war inside your own mind, your real life is passing you by.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a radically different path to healing. ACT is not about "fixing" you, because you are not broken. Instead, ACT provides you with the skills to change your relationship with your difficult thoughts and feelings so that they no longer have the power to control your actions or dictate your life.
At Nourished Connections Counseling, we provide specialized ACT therapy in Davidson, Winston-Salem, and virtually across North Carolina. We are here to help you stop the internal war and start building a rich, full, and meaningful life—right now, exactly as you are.
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), pronounced as the word "act," is an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. It is often referred to as part of the "third wave" of behavioral therapies, as it blends behavioral science with mindfulness practices and values clarification tools.
The primary goal of ACT is to help you develop psychological flexibility.
This is the ability to connect fully with the present moment, including difficult thoughts and feelings, and to choose actions that are aligned with your deepest values, rather than actions that are driven by avoidance or fear.
Instead of teaching you how to challenge or change cognitive distortions (as is done in traditional CBT), ACT teaches you how to change the way you interact with your thoughts. We use an experiential approach that focuses on a powerful acronym:
-
Accept your internal experience (thoughts, feelings, sensations) and be present.
-
Choose a valued life direction.
-
Take action.
In an ACT framework, a "successful" life is not one that is free of pain, but one that is lived with vitality and purpose, even in the presence of difficult emotions.
The Six Core Processes of ACT: Building Psychological Flexibility
ACT is not just about "accepting everything." It utilizes six core pillars (sometimes called the "ACT Hexaflex") to actively build the skills of psychological flexibility. Throughout your therapy sessions, we will practice skills in all six areas:
1. Acceptance Acceptance does not mean resignation, tolerance, or liking the difficult experience. It means making room for your thoughts and feelings exactly as they are. It is the brave choice to drop the heavy shield you’ve been carrying to fight anxiety, sadness, or shame, allowing those feelings to exist without trying to ignore them, argue with them, or escape them. By accepting the "static" of your emotions, you can redirect that energy toward living.
2. Cognitive Defusion Perfectionism, OCD, and anxiety often tell us scary, sticky stories. Cognitive defusion teaches you how to step back from these thoughts and see them for what they are: merely a stream of words and images passing through your mind, not absolute truths or commands you must obey. Techniques like saying a thought out loud in a silly voice, or imagining your thoughts as leaves floating down a stream, help you detach from their hook.
3. Being Present (Mindfulness) Anxiety is usually focused on the future; depression and trauma are usually focused on the past. ACT utilizes mindfulness practices to ground you in the here-and-now. By connecting fully with the present moment, you can shift from running on autopilot to actively choosing how you want to interact with your environment.
4. Self-as-Context (The Observing Self) You are not just the content of your thoughts, your feelings, or the roles you play (student, parent, employee). There is a part of you—the Observing Self—that exists separate from all of that. Cultivating this sense of perspective allows you to view your painful internal experiences safely, knowing that the core of who you are remains untouched and unharmed.
5. Values Clarification If you are no longer driven by the need to avoid pain, what do you want your life to be about? Values are your heart’s deepest desires for how you want to interact with the world, others, and yourself. They are not goals (which can be checked off), but rather a compass that guides your daily behaviors. We help you identify what truly matters to you—connection, creativity, service, courage, or adventure—to provide you with a clear roadmap.
6. Committed Action Values are abstract; committed action is concrete. This is the process of taking effective, goal-oriented steps aligned with your values, even when the going gets tough. Committed action means that you can be anxious and go to the job interview. You can feel body distress and nourish yourself with a meal. ACT focuses on expanding your behavioral repertoire, allowing you to live your values even in the presence of internal obstacles.
What Struggles Does ACT Help With?
Because psychological flexibility is a foundational mental health skill, ACT has been scientifically proven to be effective for a wide array of psychological concerns. We integrate ACT therapy heavily into our work at Nourished Connections Counseling, particularly for:
Anxiety, Panic, & Social Anxiety
When you struggle with anxiety, the feeling itself is so intolerable that you might spend all your time trying to make it stop or avoiding triggers. ACT therapy focuses on reducing this avoidance. We work on building willingness—the capacity to carry the anxiety with you so that it no longer stops you from engaging in social events, pursuing your career, or simply relaxing.
Eating Disorders and Body Image Concerns
Eating disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia, BED, Orthorexia) are often driven by an intense desire to avoid or escape overwhelming emotions and body dissatisfaction. ACT is an exceptionally powerful tool for recovery. In a HAES-aligned (Health at Every Size) framework, ACT helps clients accept the presence of intense body distress or urges without acting on them. We work heavily on cognitive defusion from the "eating disorder voice" and utilize values clarification to help clients find a sense of identity and purpose outside of weight, shape, and food control.
Depression and Bipolar Disorder
Depression can often trap you in "freeze mode," making you believe that you can't take action until you feel motivated or happy again. ACT challenges this. We focus on "value-based behavioral activation," helping you identify small, manageable actions you can take to move your life in a meaningful direction, even on the days you feel low. We also work on defusing from hopeless or self-critical self-talk.
OCD (Adjunctive to ERP)
While Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the primary treatment for OCD, ACT provides an invaluable adjunctive framework. Many individuals find ERP easier to engage in when it is paired with ACT concepts. We use ACT values to motivate clients to face their exposures, and we use cognitive defusion to help them sit with their intrusive thoughts without performing mental or physical compulsions.
Perfectionism and Overcontrol
For "high-achievers" struggling with clinical perfectionism, ACT is crucial for developing flexibility. We work on accepting the distress of imperfection and recognizing that your worth as a human being is entirely separate from your achievements.
Our Approach: Inclusive, Affirming, and Contextual
ACT is fundamentally an inclusive modality. It views suffering as a universal, inevitable part of the human experience, rather than a sign that you are broken or uniquely damaged.
At Nourished Connections Counseling, we apply ACT through a lens of profound respect for your unique lived experience. We understand that many internal pain points (like anxiety, shame, or hypervigilance) are logical, adaptive responses to systemic oppression, cultural trauma, or prolonged marginalization.
Our practice is a radically inclusive and affirming space for individuals of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and physical abilities. We provide culturally humble care that validates the societal context of your distress, while still equipping you with ACT skills to help you build psychological resilience and find freedom within your current circumstances.
